An emperor obsessed with fashion hires two swindlers who promise to make him the finest clothes ever—invisible to anyone who is stupid or incompetent. The emperor, not wanting to appear foolish, pretends to see the clothes. His ministers do the same. When he parades through the city in his “new clothes,” everyone praises him—until a child cries out:
“But he isn’t wearing anything at all!”
The illusion shatters, and the emperor realizes he’s been tricked—but continues the parade, too proud to admit the truth.
